The legal process through which a lawful permanent resident becomes a U.S. citizen. Eligibility generally requires five years of Lawful Permanent Resident status (or three years if married to a U.S. citizen), physical presence in the US for half of the period, maintenance of a permanent U.S. residence, and demonstration of good moral character.
